# Getting USDC in Europe

> USDC is a digital dollar that stays a dollar. The quickest way is to top up by card or Apple Pay right at checkout — here is that, plus the exchange route for when you want it.

*Chapter 03 · 12 min · Buyers in the EU*

## 1. What USDC is

USDC is a digital dollar. One USDC is designed to always be worth one US dollar — it is issued by a regulated company that holds real dollars and short-term US government bonds behind every unit. It is not an investment, and it does not swing about like the coins in the news. On Bifrost it is simply the money: prices are quoted in dollars, USDC is how those dollars move, and it sits in your own wallet — the one created when you signed in — not in any balance Bifrost holds. If you can picture a dollar bill that travels by internet, you have it.

## 2. The quickest path: card or Apple Pay at checkout

You do not have to leave Bifrost to get USDC. Checkout offers a top-up powered by our sign-in partner: pay with a card or Apple Pay and the equivalent USDC arrives in your own wallet a moment later, with the identity check handled right there in the widget. If your balance runs short at the till, the same sheet charges exactly the shortfall — one flow, never leaving the page. For most first purchases this is all you need — fund exactly what the coin costs and pay in the same sitting. The exchange route below is still worth knowing for larger amounts, where its fees are lower.

## 3. The slower path, for larger amounts: a regulated exchange

There are many advertised shortcuts; ignore them. The reliable route for Europeans is a regulated exchange — Coinbase or Kraken are the two we would tell our own parents to use. Create an account and verify your identity with a photo ID. The identity check can feel intrusive, but it is the same law that protects your money at any financial institution, and it is a good sign, not a bad one. Allow ten minutes — occasionally a day, if their checks are busy.

## 4. Move euros in by SEPA

Fund the exchange account with an ordinary SEPA transfer — the same kind you use to pay rent. SEPA transfers are free or nearly free and usually arrive within a few hours; SEPA Instant, where offered, lands in seconds. Start with a modest amount for your first run — enough for the coin you have in mind, plus a small margin. You can always send more once you have watched the whole path work end to end, which is exactly what careful people do.

## 5. Buy USDC

On the exchange, find USDC and buy it with your euro balance — on Coinbase and Kraken this is a single screen. You are doing a simple currency exchange, euros to digital dollars, at very close to the real EUR–USD rate. The fee is typically between 0.1% and 0.5%, depending on the exchange and order type; on €500 that is roughly €1–3. Double-check that it is USDC you are buying — the exchange will happily list hundreds of other things you do not need.

## 6. Withdraw to your Bifrost wallet — and pick the Base network

Now send the USDC to the 0x address of your Bifrost wallet — the one shown on your account page. On the withdrawal screen the exchange asks which network to use: choose Base. This is the one moment in the whole journey that deserves your full attention — USDC exists on several networks, and Base is the one Bifrost lives on. The fee is small and fixed, usually well under a dollar, and the transfer lands in a few minutes. Send a small test amount first if it settles your nerves; many careful people do.

> If the network list does not show Base, stop and ask the exchange's support. Never “just pick one” — the network must say Base.

## 7. The third route: USDC you already hold

Already keep USDC in another wallet? Then there is nothing to buy — send it to your Bifrost wallet address over the Base network, and the site notices the moment it lands. The same single rule applies as with an exchange withdrawal: the network must say Base. The network fee is the sender's, and on Base it is tiny — typically under a cent.

## 8. The whole thing in sixty seconds

The fastest route is the in-checkout top-up: card or Apple Pay, USDC in your wallet in a moment — best for funding a single coin. The exchange route pays off on larger amounts: Coinbase or Kraken account verified with your ID; euros in by SEPA (free, a few hours); buy USDC (about 0.1–0.5% in fees); withdraw to your Bifrost wallet address on the Base network (a fixed fee under a dollar, minutes to arrive). And if you already hold USDC anywhere, simply send it to your address — on Base. First time through the exchange, expect a day, mostly waiting on the identity check and the bank transfer; every time after, about ten minutes. However it arrives, once the USDC is in your own wallet you are one tap from your first coin.
